Interview: Nami Tamaki on Starbound Tour, Anisongs, and her Fans

We had the honor of having a short interview with anisong artist and Gundam icon Nami Tamaki during her visit to the Philippines for Cosplay Mania 2026. She is also set to perform at the Japanese Anime Music (JAM) Concert on October 2, as part of her ongoing “Nami Tamaki Live 2026 Starbound Tour.”

Nami Tamaki is known for her high-energy J-Pop performances and theme songs, including “Brightdown” from the D.Gray-man anime, “Sanctuary” from Kiba, and most notably the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. Her 2003 debut “Believe” was featured as the theme for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, followed by “Reason” and “Realize.” In 2023, she celebrated the 20th anniversary of her music career and performed “Reborn” for the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM film, which also celebrated its 20th anniversary milestone.

Parts of this interview have been lightly edited for clarity.

Q: Outside of music, what activities or hobbies inspire you and influence your creativity?

Nami Tamaki: I ride my motorcycle, watch anime, play games, and draw. Sometimes, I also go to museums.

Q: Your songs from Gundam Seed, D. Gray-Man, and Kiba have become iconic and nostalgic memories for many Filipinos. Can you share with us what your experience has been like performing these beloved anisongs in your Starbound Tour?

Nami Tamaki: I was so happy because everyone sang along in Japanese so loud that I thought it would make the venue blow up.It makes me incredibly happy to feel that over the years people have continued to love the songs that mean so much to me.

Q: What was your reaction when you found out that you were going to perform in the Philippines? Do you have a message that you want to share with your Filipino fans?

Nami Tamaki: I’ve received comments on social media saying how happy they are that I’ll be coming back to the Philippines, and it made me really happy to know that there are people waiting for me.

I promise it’s going to be an exciting and fun time, so let’s enjoy the live show together!
